This series is unlike any of Choi Hui’s previous works. The years 2020 to 2022 were a time of upheaval for everyone—and for him as well. For a long period, his life fell out of balance.

It was a feeling of fragility and confinement. The large-scale outbreak of the pandemic deepened a sense of isolation in daily life. As a result, the photographer found himself with more time to observe his surroundings and reflect inward.

During this time, Choi Hui traveled from southern regions to the southernmost cities in China, carrying a compact film camera with him. He took these photos without any clear purpose in mind and had no habit of organizing or editing them. It wasn’t until he was backing up files and clearing storage on his computer that the idea of turning them into a book began to take shape.
