Jasper Yi Cao (b. 1998, Changsha, China) is a photographic artist and book designer based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Her work explores the intersection of archives, memory, and collective experience in contemporary Chinese society.

Blending photography, handmade books, and darkroom techniques, she constructs non-linear visual narratives. She is also the founder of a design studio and co-founder of the “Howling Cactus” photography group, through which she has published magazines, exhibited internationally, and supported self-publishing. Her practice spans image-making, editorial design, and independent publishing, with a focus on history, memory, and the poetics of time.

2024 Photo book
Youshen is a traditional folk activity prevalent in the southeastern coastal regions of China, particularly concentrated in areas like Southern Fujian and Eastern Guangdong. Its history can be traced back to ancient religious beliefs and folk traditions, including witchcraft, Confucianism, and Taoism. Over time, Youshen has developed diverse performance styles and ritual ceremonies unique to different regions.

As creators from different backgrounds than the local ones, we attempt to document each procession we participate in from an outsider's perspective. We immerse ourselves in the deity parade, following the crowd in a detached state, moving towards the unknown. In this book, we use fragmented images to try to recreate the scenes of the deity parades as seen through the eyes of an observer.

In the main volume's layout, the design distinguishes between the works of two photographers by using day and night as foundational elements, allowing readers to distinctly feel the passage of time during the deity procession.
